Chapter 2; Question 1

On page 43 Neil Anderson asserts:  “Many Christians are not living free and productive lives because they don’t understand who they are and why they are here.”  How does this contrast with the world’s view of living a free and productive life and how can integrating this concept into each counseling session change how you work with your clients?
Chapter 2; Question 2

On pages 44-45 Neil Anderson outlines the inadequacy of some gospel messages.  Unfortunately many of our clients will come from churches where the whole gospel is not preached so it is important to integrate a very clear and complete gospel message in our counseling, even for those who profess to believe in Christ.  We often don’t consider that evangelism needs to continue after a person comes to salvation, but I think this chapter makes a good argument that it does.

Neil states that sometimes we end up with forgiven sinners instead of redeemed saints.  Is he just being to nit picky about wording or is there a real difference?  If there is, how can you use this concept in counseling to help client develop a an accurate picture of who they are in Christ?
Chapter 2; Question 3

On Page 47 it says “People cannot consistently behave in ways that are inconsistent with the way they perceive themselves.”  Agree, disagree?  If you agree, what does this say about behavioral approaches to treatment?  Biblically, how should we get to changed behavior?  How does this contrast from what the world says?  And just to stir the pot a little bit, what does this say about the WWJD movement?
Chapter 2; Question 4

On page 51 there begins a list of Biblical references entitled “Who am I?”  How can you/will you use these in counseling?
(If you are interested, I had a client who after being assigned this one week came back with a really nice card with these verses on them.  Let me know and I will send it out to you via email or make copies available here at the office.)
Chapter 2; Question 5

Open discussion:  What struck you but was not included in other questions?  Do you have any questions about the content (don’t be afraid to ask, others may be wondering the same things)?  What do you disagree with in the book?  Etc.

Victory Over Darkness Discussion

You can not judge a book by it's cover, or can you? Those who are on the journey with "Victory Over the Darkness" here are a couple of questions to contemplate as we begin the journey.
The cover states the title of the book as Victoru Over The Darkness: Realizing the power of your identity in Christ. It shows a broken man broken progressing into wholness in the light. What does the cover mean to you?
Identify/define "your identity in Christ"
Who are you? The title for chapter 1. This is a good question. How do you answer it for yourself. How do you answer it for your clients?
There are a couple of points in chapter 2 that I am thinking through theologically. For example "The whole gospel". Does your identity in Christ have a connection to the gospel? Is Anderson additing to the simple gospel, making it more than it is? I am thinking through the whole idea of "what is true of Christ is true of you (p.51)? Is this true in reality or just in Anderson's mind?
Would the list on pages 51-52 be helpful to have available for clients. Hard to argue with this as it all has Scritpure support.

Over the next couple of weeks be reading chapter one and two. Respond to my thought provoking questions. Post your thoughts. I am thinking that Monday August 27 at 7 we can all get together at the office and discuss where/how to proceed from here.

Hello everyone...
Dr. Phil sent me an email with a scenario he asked me to share on the blog for feedback and responses.. if you could read it over and respond as you see fit that would be very helpful..

"23 year old son who was out of home for past four years.  Became disrespectful to both parents junior year of high school.  Moved back into parents home as he had no where else to go.  Still very disrespectful.  Refuses to help around the house or obey simple requests like clean your room or take out the trash.  Mom does not deal well with his disrespect.  She fights back.  The war is on.  Mom called the police recently simply because she told him to get off the couch and go upstairs and he refused. Dad ignores the the disrespect and has a better response, but son still does not listen or obey.
Son reared in a Christian home, but not walking with the Lord today.  Parents are walking with the Lord, but two different paths.  They do not have the best marriage.
Mom wants to throw the son out on street in act of tough love.  Dad things that is overkill.

What would you tell this family?"
